Retiring and Considering How to Stretch your Retirement Dollars?

Pennsylvania fully exempts all income from Social Security, as well as payments from retirement accounts, like 401(k)s and IRAs. It also exempts pension income for seniors age 60 or older.

  • PA does not tax Social Security income;
  • PA does not tax either public or private pension income (age 60 or older);
  • PA does not tax funds one takes out of an Individual Retirement Acct (IRA);
  • PA does not tax income from an employer contribution retirement plan – 401(k);
  • PA does not tax military retirement if one has fulfilled one’s years of service or reaches retirement age.  Military pay is also exempt from PA personal income tax for those serving in the PA National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve even if active duty was performed outside of PA;
  • PA does not charge an estate tax for spouses or direct heirs aged 21 or younger;
  • PA state sales tax in only 6% and food and clothing are tax exempt;
  • PA does not tax prescription and non-prescription drugs.
